WHEN TO UPGRADE

Signs your fuse box needs replacing

Many homes in Worcester still have the original fuse box. If any of these sound familiar, it is worth getting it looked at.

Before
Old fuse box before upgrade
After
Modern consumer unit fitted after upgrade

Old fuse box replaced with a modern compliant metal consumer unit with circuit protection.

Rewireable fuses

Fuse wire in pull-out carriers, or a board with a wooden back, is a sure sign of an old installation. When a fuse blows you have to rewire it by hand, and there is nothing to stop someone fitting the wrong size.

No RCD protection

An RCD switches the power off in a fraction of a second if current leaks to earth, for example through a person. Older boards often have none, leaving sockets and bathroom circuits unprotected.

Frequent tripping

A board that trips for no clear reason, or takes everything off at once, makes life awkward and can point to a fault. A modern board with RCBOs means one fault only switches off one circuit.

Scorch marks, heat or a burning smell

Discolouration, crackling or a warm board means loose or overheating connections. Switch off and call straight away. This is one of the few jobs we treat as a same day emergency.

Plastic board under the stairs

Current wiring regulations require consumer units in homes to have a non-combustible enclosure, usually metal. An older plastic unit sitting under the stairs is worth replacing.

Planning other work

Adding an EV charger, a kitchen, an extension or a shower often needs more capacity and modern protection. Upgrading the board first keeps everything safe and compliant.

WHAT IS INCLUDED

What your upgrade includes

1

Survey and fixed quote

Mark checks the existing board, the earthing and the number of circuits, then gives you a fixed price plus VAT.

2

Pre-work testing

Circuits are tested before the change so any existing faults are found and explained up front.

3

New metal consumer unit

A quality metal consumer unit with RCBO or RCD protection, sized for your home with space to add circuits later.

4

Surge protection where required

Surge protection is fitted where the regulations call for it, which covers most homes.

5

Earthing and bonding checks

Main earthing and bonding to gas and water are checked and any upgrades needed are included in your quote.

6

Full testing and labelling

Every circuit is tested and clearly labelled so you know what each switch does.

7

Certificates and notification

An Electrical Installation Certificate, plus registration with building control through NICEIC.

8

Tidy finish and old board removed

The old fuse box is taken away and the area is left clean. Work is covered by a 1 year workmanship guarantee.

PRICING

Consumer unit upgrade cost

£800 to £1,200 +VAT

Most upgrades in Worcester and the surrounding towns fall within this range. You get a fixed price after the visit, and that is the price you pay unless you ask for something extra.

What affects the price

Number of circuits

A larger home with more circuits needs a bigger board and more RCBOs.

Type of protection

Individual RCBOs on each circuit cost a little more than a split board with shared RCDs, and stop one fault switching off half the house.

Earthing and bonding

If the main earth or bonding to gas and water pipes is missing or undersized, it has to be brought up to standard.

Position of the board

Keeping it where it is costs least. Moving it adds a little labour and cable.
